Costa Rica Wildlife Tour

Tour Itinerary

• Day 1: UK - San Jose

  Fly to San Jose, Costa Rica, where your tour begins.

• Day 2: San Jose

  Head to Poas Volcano National Park where you can spot the smoke from one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanos, rising from the tropical rainforest. Return to San Jose, stopping off at a Toucan Rescue Ranch on the way.

• Days 3-4: San Gerardo de Dota

  Explore the trails surrounding your lodge in search of the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, known for its iconic long green tail.

• Day 5: Turrialba

  Head to Turrialba, an important agricultural region thanks to its fertile land and the origin of much of Costa Rica’s coffee, sugar and Macadamia nuts. This evening, enjoy a traditional meal at a typical ‘finca’ (farm).

• Day 6: Turrialba

  Today you’ll venture to the Pacuare, one of Costa Rica’s most scenic rivers, for whitewater rafting followed by lunch on the river and an afternoon free to rest and recuperate.

• Days 7-8: Tortuguero

  You’ll drive through extensive banana plantations to the Caribbean coast and take a boat to your lodge in the Tortuguero National Park, your home for the next two nights. The park boasts an abundance of unique birdlife, and a complex canal system linking small, isolated settlements. Enjoy a short walking tour and you might be lucky enough to spot green turtles as they nest on the beaches.

• Day 9: Sarapiqui

  Today, head to Puerto Viejo Sarapiqui, visiting La Tirimbina for a chocolate tour, learning about the extraordinary history of the cacao plant and witnessing the chocolate-making process, followed by a night walk in Selva Verde Rainforest.

• Days 10-11: Fortuna

  You’ll drive to Arenal, a volcano famous for its nightly eruptions before it went quiet in 2010. Learn about the science and history of the volcano on a tour before exploring La Fortuna, a town which was renamed after the 1986 eruption, after fortunately escaping destruction. You’ll have a free day to explore the Arenal area.

• Days 12-14: Manuel Antonio

  Head south towards the Pacific Coast, pausing at Carara Biological Reserve before continuing to Manuel Antonio National Park where you’ll spend the next three nights. This is the perfect place to see sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys in the park, and swim in the warm azure waters on white sandy beaches.

• Day 15: San Jose - UK

  Transfer to San Jose and fly back to the UK.
